The First Lands
Throughout the First Lands, the spirit realm lies just beneath the surface. Every landscape bears the marks of a fragile balance.
Inside the story · 2 MIN
Spirit realm · Martial traditions · Resistance
Ionia is an archipelago of provinces, not a single uniform kingdom. The boundary between physical life and the spirit realm is unusually close here. Forests, gardens and mountains can respond to the people who inhabit them. Architecture often works around living forms, and local traditions value accommodation with the land. That beauty does not make Ionia harmless: its magic and wildlife can be unpredictable.
The Noxian invasion exposed the limits of a society defended by monasteries, local militias and the land itself. Irelia’s resistance at the Placidium became a defining symbol, but victory did not restore an untouched past. Communities had lost families, sacred places and confidence in old answers. The question of how to protect Ionia now divides those who once fought the same enemy.
Shen’s Kinkou pursue equilibrium between the material and spiritual worlds, even when impartiality is painful. Zed’s Order of Shadow instead turns forbidden techniques into weapons for national defence. The Navori Brotherhood presses its own militant vision. These positions are not a simple contest between good and evil: each claims to answer the trauma of occupation, and each places a different cost on the people it protects.
Humans and vastayan tribes inhabit overlapping territories, but coexistence is not automatically peaceful. Settlement and the control of natural magic can threaten vastayan ways of life. Meanwhile, martial disciplines carry philosophies as well as combat techniques. A monastery, a village market and an ancient battlefield offer very different windows onto Ionia; the region becomes clearer when these everyday and spiritual histories are read together.
